There are no ready-made answers. You’ll learn when you find yourself in a situation that is in dire need of attention - and you look for relevant support. He usually walks in his client’s shadow and advises him on his best options and alternatives in every situation. He will take care of problems as they pop up into your face, something your secretary or family usually can’t do for you. Often, he is the first and only contact person. The Sherpa must understand that his or her role is to point out policy issues, unspoken assumptions, etc., but not to advocate an answer. The guide is there to point the way, not to select the destination. He or she must remain neutral. Sherpas must be comfortable knowing they will usually be replaced in a while, as a good Sherpa will naturally become a focus for any frustrations management feels with its board. - Silently and efficiently
Keep in mind that this person is a professional and a hard worker on your behalf. Listen to what your Sherpa guide tells you about the land and the climb. He or she has climbed these mountains and knows them intimately. Respect this person’s knowledge and use it to make your climb memorable and as safe as possible. Remember, even though the Sherpa is hauling your gear and blazing your trail, he or she is not your lowly servant. Treat him or her with the respect you would want to be shown. - Respect
It’s everything. When an issue becomes important for a client it will be considered a priority - given what else might be on his plate right now. When the problem is immediate enough he can put resources into a solution at this point. That’s when the client names his price. A thoughtful offer (an initial gesture) buys him respect and will trigger evaluation whether to consider the job - or not. Doing great does not come cheap. For special tasks I contact seasoned specialists. When the pace needs to be fast, that’s how we do it. Otherwise I tend to slow things down. I spend many hours in front of an Apple MacBook Pro and instant-message (video conference) with associates and clients on iChat or Skype when required; I don’t chat but will respond to a serious call. When working with a client communications are scheduled as discipline allows for efficiency. Depending on the importance of the job I offer absolute availability. - Do you work alone or as part of a network?
I work alone, bring in trusted associates (people who’ll do to ride the river with) when necessary and have formed my own network: 911 Personal Assistant. Other than that I have no ties.
